Walk/Ride to School Day Oct. 12

Hudson students will be joining students from across the country and around the world in celebrating International Walk/Bike to School Day. In Hudson, we will be celebrating the day on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, with a Rain Date of Thursday, Oct. 13th.

This years theme is Hike It, Bike It, Like It! The 2011 slogan was submitted by Horace Mann Elementary School (Oak Park, Ill.) students through a first-ever online contest. Their school was awarded a mini-grant to promote year-round healthy activities. Hopefully, as our network grows we will be able to promote walkng and riding to school in even bigger ways, and who knows, we may be the slogan winner! Our Spring Bike/Walk to School Day was a great success, despite the rainy weather we had that May morning. Those that choose to walk or ride that day had fun, and there were reports of decreased lines of traffic around the schools. (See earlier post)

Please put this event Walk/Bike to School Day, Wed. Oct. 12 on your calendars, and watch and listen for school announcements for details. If you would like to coordinate a group from your neighborhood, contact Leslie Daly lbdaly@windstream.net or Laura Jones

First Bike/ Walk to School Day in May

Many students walked or rode bikes to school as part of Safe Routes Hudson's first Bike/Ride to School Day on May 18, 2011, as part of National Bike to School Week.

Those that braved the threatening skies that morning had a lot of fun. Some planned to make it a regular part of their routine. Car lines for drop offs at some schools were even reported to be shorter, showing that the first Bike/Walk Day was a success.

Students at Evamere, East Woods, McDowell, Ellsworth Hills and the Middle School all participated. Many were rewarded with refreshments, muffins and small prizes, all generously provided by the hard-working parents who coordinated the event. Thanks parents! Safe Routes efforts only work when it has the enthusiastic support of parents and students.

We will have another event on Oct. 12 to celebrate International Walk/Bike to School Day, and hope to repeat the May event next year.
