Hudson Bike to School Day May 16, 2012

Hudson Schools to celebrate
National Bike/Walk to School Week on May 16th

Hudson Schools will be joining schools from around the U.S. to celebrate National our second annual Bike/Walk to School and Work Week on May 16, 2012.

Students from Evamere, East Woods, McDowell and Hudson Middle School will be walking and bicycling to school that Wednesday along with parents, teachers and community leaders.

In the morning there will be tables outside the schools set up to greet walkers and bicyclists with reflective Hudson "H" backpack stickers.  Walkers and bicyclists will be given special recognition during morning announcements.   There will be parent volunteers and an increased police presence in neighborhoods surrounding Hudson Schools.

Bike/Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity, promoting independence among children, pedestrian and bicycle safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by Safe Routes Hudson, a community initiated effort to improve the walking and bicycling conditions in Hudson.  Special emphasis is being placed on a combination of activities that make it safer for our children to walk and bicycle to school.

National Bike/Walk to School and Work Week is expected to include 5,000 schools from all 50 states.

Safe Routes Hudson Schools Travel Plan Approved

Safe Routes Hudson first project was creating a School Travel Plan (STP) to apply for funding under the federal Safe Routes to Schools program. The SRTS program, administered by the Ohio Department of Transportation, annually awards grants of up to $500,000 for infrastructure and non-infrastructure enhancements that promote walking and biking to school among students in grades K-8.

The Hudson STP was approved in record time, which now means that the Safe Routes Hudson group can move forward with our application for funding specific projects. The decision and announcement on these grants will be made later on in the spring. More details are available from the Hudson Hub Times.
